Gombe Stream National Park

Description

This park is famous for some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat. One may also remember it from the work conducted by Dr Jane Goodall, who conducted an extensive 40 years research in this park. It's also a great opportunity to visit the Tanganyika as the park is situated on its shores. Though it is the smallest national park in Tanzania, it is the only place in the world where guaranteed sights of chimpanzee groups is possible.
The park has a hilly terrain, from the lakeshore to the top of the rift escarpment and is better viewed by foot, with a professional guide, or by boat.

Wildlife

This park is famous for the Chimpanzees. However, other wildlife include olive baboons, vervet, red taller and red colobus monkeys. Regarding birdlife, there are over 200 species and the most famous ones are the palm-nut vultures and fish eagles.

When to go

Open throughout the year but best from May to October.

What to do

Walking and boat safaris and treks to find groups of Chimpanzees and other primates in the park. Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, treks, boating and visits to the nearby fishing village of Mwamgongo are other possibilities.
